Happy Tuesday 4-20-10
Hi Smiley,
Thanks for coming to visit me today. I wanted to tell you some of the simple facts about testing your life safety equipment. Today I will give you a basic guide to Fire Alarm Systems. Did you know Fire Alarm system should be tested on a minimum annual basis according to NFPA 72 Standards? Testing frequency might be determined by your own company, insurance company or the local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) to perform these tests. To help get more familiar with some of the devices associated to a Fire Alarm system I have put a list of some of these devices (some facilities may vary in associated system devices) I have also listed beside the devices where you may see them in your own facility:
Control Panel (usually located in a Mechanical room or a particular office space)
NAC Panels (usually located beside the control panel or in a storage room on each floor depending on the size of building)
Annunciators (usually located by front doors or back)
Pull Stations (usually located at door exits)
Audio/Visuals (located on ceilings & walls)
Visuals (located in Bathrooms, Conference rooms)
Smoke Detectors (usually located above Control Panels, Ceilings, above & below Elevators)
Heat Detectors (usually located in break rooms, storage rooms, electrical rooms)
Door Holders (usually located on single and double doors through hall ways)
Primary & Secondary recall, Shunt Trip test (located on the Elevator(s)
Duct Detectors (usually located on HVAC systems' return side currently; future code subject to change)
Tamper Switches, Water Flows & Pressure Switches (located on Sprinkler systems)
These are the devices that I look for when I'm asked to come out and do a survey of a customers property in order to put a testing package together. I hope this information can be helpful in learning more about the life safety equipment that just might be surrounding you.
Remember to "turn that frown upside down"
Have a great day!
